The Struggle is Real

Published in Two Times Removed Volume II

The seam of the roti was hot as I flipped it with my bare hand. Crispy flakes flew across the makeshift kitchen as the roti landed on the tawa. Sweat collected on my forehead, I never could stand the heat. A pot of oil bubbled beside me and pushed the golden plantain around with a pot spoon, ladling the oil to make them fry evenly.

"Jaya, hurry up; Nah, man!"

Mom's voice carried over the steady steel drum beat that floated between the flea market stalls and the loud chatter that filled the air. Bright, glittery lehengas hung from the ceiling and gold costume jewellery twinkled under the yellow industrial lights.

I snuck a peek over my shoulder. A long line was forming in front of our food stall-hungry people. People who looked like they would fight if they weren't fed in time. Taking a deep breath, I pulled the roti from the tawa and clapped, the heat burning the tips of my fingers. I clenched my teeth, wanting to drop it, but that would mean I'd have to start again.

How to Grow a Pumpkin

Published on Brown Gyal Diary

Hi, I’m Nadia and I’ve killed pretty much every plant I’ve ever touched by either neglect or too much love (read: water and sunlight).

But plenty of people don’t have green thumbs, right? What’s the big deal?

Well, like some of you, I was born to farmers from Demerara, Guyana. Both my parents were born and raised on acres of farmland where they tended to cows and goats and chickens and grew crops that my grandparents sold at the market.

They tried to get me interested in gardening and planting, but I never seemed to have the hand for it. I was impatient and rough, and often carelessly tore the leaves and roots.

Cue the disappointed brown parent face. Seriously though, you should have seen my parents’ faces when I refused to water their many eggplants, hot pepper and squash plants while they were at work because I didn’t know how much water they actually needed. Not to mention if I accidentally killed their plants, I would never hear the end of it!
